Josh Katz of the New York Times used Akron, Ohio, as the dateline for a story projecting a 19 percent increase in deaths last year.
He collected data from key states and counties in the nation’s opioid crisis — include Ohio among them — to estimate that deaths would soar to more than 59,000, making it the leading cause of death for people under 50.
His chart is stunning, and well worth the look.
He estimates 3,310 died in Ohio, and contacted coroners covering the following counties to make his estimate:
Brown, Butler, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Lake, Lawrence, Lorain, Mahoning, Montgomery, Richland, Ross, Scioto, Stark, Summit, Trumbull and Warren
