We hosted community conversations in Dayton, Middletown, suburban Cincinnati, Wilmington, and Washington Court House in February 2018 to brainstorm with local residents on solutions to the opioid crisis.
Our project partners include the Chillicothe Gazette, Columbus Dispatch, Dayton Daily News, Eye on Ohio, Journal-News, the Miami Student, the University of Cincinnati News Record, Springfield News-Sun, Washington Court House Record Herald, Wilmington News Journal, WHIO – TV , WKRC – Cincinnati, WVXU – Cincinnati, and WYSO – Yellow Springs. Similar to our events in the Mahoning Valley, we asked three main questions:
- What does the opioid epidemic look like in our community?
- What do we see as causes of the epidemic in our community?
- What steps might we take to combat the opioid epidemic?
Current Research
At the events each community member wrote down questions they had for local journalists. Over the next few months, we’ll work with local media to research topics, answer their questions, and deliver our findings back to the community.
Here are the questions we’ll start exploring:
- How does addiction work? (answered)
- Who has prescribing power for Medication-Assisted Treatment? (answered)
- What does comprehensive care look like?
- What is the role of pharmaceutical companies in the crisis? (answered)
